Atkins...blows...

Well ok maybe it is too early to say that. But the diet this week did not make good progress, and I can't really understand why, I did more exercise this week than any other week, I must have briskly walked about 30 miles this week, I haven't cheated and I lost a measly 0.29% which now makes me behind target.
I have to say so far I have been dissapointed with the Atkins results, I am still not in Ketosis, and I really don't fancy the idea of living on cream cheese for a week, so I may revert to a diet that I know works for me which is the one I was given a while ago by my nutrionalist, the DASH diet, which is better for blood pressure and I really could kill for an apple or a plum. So I'll give it till next Thursday, and if things aren't back on track, I'll be switching, and we'll see what progress is made then. Total Weight loss for 5 weeks is 5.07%, have I noticed any changes? Well there have been a couple, I think my double chin is a little smaller, and this one is weird, but the fat around my belly is now different, it's now more jiggly if that makes any sense. Can't really say my trousers feel any loser, but that is probably because they were too tight at the start.
One side note, I am still waiting for Angelina Jolie to call me, so she obviously expects more than 5% weight loss. Hmm, maybe I should change my weight loss graph to a picture of Lara Croft on the phone...

I checked out your link on the DASH diet and I honestly have to say that I think this diet is a bit more "sound" than the Atkins diet. It looks as if it takes into account all food groups (which in actuality the body needs). I'm not much into diets as I think the majority have a high failure rate. I am a firm believer in a balanced diet and eating small portions throughout the day. (and controlling your intake of sweets and fatty foods - although the body does need some fat content). The theory behind good weight loss is that it has to be gradual (nothing over 2 lb's a week in weight loss if you want to keep it off) If you eliminate too much caloric intake in your diet, your body automatically goes into "starvation" mode and stores extra fat for survival (that is why most diets never work because the weight they lose is too dramatic and the body stores extra fat for survival purposes. Once someone goes off the diet, those extra fat cells don't go away, so they gain it back plus more). As with diabetics, the key has always been to keep your metabolism at an even keel throughout the day and don't let your sugars drop dramatically. It's not what you eat necessarily, but how much of it you eat, what combinations and how often you eat. I know a girl that went on some kind of diet (not sure which one) but it seemed to work great...the concept was that you could eat anything you want, only to the point of being sated...no seconds, etc. And you didn't have to always finish what was on your plate. I also think she ate small meals throughout the day. It worked for her and she looks good.
Sorry for such a long winded reply and getting on my soap box, but diets were never something I ever believed in. But I do admire those that go on diets and can stick to it...cuz...I know I couldn't ever do it myself!!!

Exercise never seemed to have mush of an effecton my weightloss with Aktins, so the fact you walked miles doesnt matter much.
I think you will have to do the pure fat fast, which is a great oxomoron.

Don't know a thing about it, but I'm having lunch with her next week, so I'll let you know how much of a pain in the ass she is at the restaurant.

He's now looking at South Beach tho, cos the GI stuff for carbs seems to make sense and it's less focused on high fat/saturated fat foods...
