Congratulations to my niece Bethany
Category Bethany Driving
Previously I had sent out a warning to all UK drivers about my niece Bethany learning to drive. Well I have to send out a warning again, today she passed her driving test, she was so excited she happily called me at 5am to tell me.
In all seriousness I had my Niece drive me around whilst I was in the UK and she was fine. She has already had one accident, where she braked for a deer, but the people behind were travelling too close and this picture tells the rest of the story. Hopefully this means she will avoid that first accident that so many new drivers have in their first year after passing.
Well done Bethany, and honestly, I never believed you would be one of those people that took the test 100 times
Oh an interesting tidbit of information, her Yaris was getting 55mpg, no hybrid, no big battery, just regular car. My brothers Saab Aero Estate TTD (Diesel) was also getting 40+ mpg. Why do cars in the US suck so bad at MPG?
So Toyota Yaris in UK manufacturers figures are:
Urban 44.1 mpg, Extra Urban 57.6 mpg, Combined 52 mpg
Toyota Yaris in the US manufacturers figures are:
29 City, 35 Highway
Perhaps better MPG for the Yaris would eat into their high profit hybrid sales?

Carl, the test procedures, calculation methods and correction factors used in the UK are different from those used in the US.

Imperial (UK) gallon is 4.54609 litres
U.S. liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres
Might make a difference in how far you can go, eh?

The main reason for the discrepancy is that there is a different way of calculating consumption between the EU and the US (as Vitor mentioned). The EU rule is 80/1268/EWG. It is a normed 20 mins test run, with simulated city traffic for two thirds, and a quickish country drive. The maximum acceleration never exceeds one meter per square meter (about a third of what is normal nowadays) and the maximum speed is 120 km/h. It is an outdated way of calculating consumption, typical values are 20% higher. Ironically, although american driving it a lot more sedate, the measuring norm is quite sporty, and in this case, more accurate.
You are not being shafted!
