It looks like the iPhone 3G is still missing a major feature for I'd need before switching.

Having just watched the iPhone 3G announcements, it's still missing a key feature I want in my phone.  The ability to use it as a Modem.  My Samsung blackjack works very well this way and would be a feature I'd heavily miss if I switched my phone.  Hopefully this will appear in the coming weeks, and jsut didn't make it into the main stage announcement.

Gravatar Image1 - "out of the box", you are correct. And I do not expect that to change with the new iPhone. If you have a jailbreak phone, then you can use it as a modem and with 3G, I'm betting this will be even more enticement than before. I've seen instructions for Linux, OSX, and Windows.

Gravatar Image2 - Major Feature? Are you serious? You think the majority of the market this thing is aimed at are the type of people who going around tethering laptops to their phones. Emoticon

Dont get me wrong. I still dislike the iphone. I cant stand the user interface.

Gravatar Image3 - @2 Interestingly enough, someone sitting next to me who currently owns a 2G iPhone, this was their first questions, can it be used as a modem.

For me it is a feature, and for ME, a major feature. Without it, I won't switch to an iPhone. That may not be true for everyone, but it's true for me.

Gravatar Image4 - Certainly fair enough. But, as already mentioned I am sure the community of devs will come up with either a hack or some 3rd party software to enable this.

Gravatar Image5 - @4 Then I can consider using one :)

Gravatar Image6 - I'll be honest - if AT&T worked well where I live, I'd likely get a new personal phone and it might very well be an iPhone. As it stands, service sucks and I only have a work cell phone and it sits on the window sill 24 hours a day. I don't even bother to remember to take it when I leave the house - service is that bad. It doesn't matter how good the phone and how good the features - it's the network.
