Lotus Notes 8 Standard is less energy efficient than Notes 8 basic
Category Application Power Consumption
At the weekend I started to play with the little KILL A WATT device. With a fully charged battery, or with the battery removed and not having anything loaded, apart from the virus scanner etc. My laptop is consuming 43 WATTS. What I found interesting was the watch the WATTS being consumed when I load different applications. Here are some observations I've recorded so far, when running without a battery in the laptop:
Lotus Notes 8.0.1 Basic, start, open email : Max consumption 48 WATTS
Lotus Notes 8.0.1 Standard, start, open email : Max consumption 56 WATTS
Microsoft Outlook 2003 Standard, start, open email : Max consumption 50 WATTS
Lotus Notes 8.0.1 Basic, once in email switching between inbox, All Documents, drafts, folders etc. : Max consumption 46 WATTS
Lotus Notes 8.0.1 Standard, once in email switching between inbox, All Documents, drafts, folders etc : Max consumption 50 WATTS
Microsoft Outlook 2003, once in email switching between inbox, All Documents, drafts, folders etc : Max consumption 58 WATTS
Lotus WordPro, open to clean document: Max consumption 45 WATTS
Microsoft Word, open to clean document: Max consumption 49 WATTS
Sametime 7.5.1 Startup, display buddylist: Max consumption 56 WATTS
Trillian Startup, display buddylist: Max consumption 52 WATTS
Slingbox Media Player: Max consumption 51 WATTS
AVG Virus SCAN: Max consumption 53 WATTS
Firefox Startup, to Google Homepage: Max consumption 51WATTS
IE Startup, to Google Homepage: Max consumption 51 WATTS
Windows Startup: Max consumption 67 WATTS
Laptop in standby, no battery installed: MAX consumption 1 WATT
Laptop Turned off, no battery installed: MAX consumption 0 WATTS
I think Notes 8 Standard is using more wattage as it's consuming more memory, swapping out to disk more etc. which all take additional power.
For me these few watts don't make a big difference, but if you imagine a company with a few thousand employees, using applications that use less energy could offer huge savings.
