Fake Webcam Software
Category Sametime
Last week I came across some software called Fake Webcam. The idea behind it is very simple, yet for some tasks very powerful, what it basically does is create a virtual drive for webcam that gets it's content from video files. I wanted to try this out, as quite often people are hosting Sametime meetings and they want to play a video of their CEO giving a message to their employees, but they want the video appear professional without it appearing as if the CEO doesn't know what they are doing. By using software like Fake Webcam that should be possible.
Sadly my experience with the software went very badly, I installed the software and loaded it up. Upon loading a video file my machine gave a blue screen of death and I rebooted. Upon reboot, my machine told me that I was missing some drivers from my system directory and refused to boot. Fortunately I had a backup of my machine so was able to recover y machine in about 15 minutes. I'm not sure if the software had a problem, because I already had a real webcam installed or what, but I wont be trying it again anytime soon on a real machine. Maybe I'll try it in a VMware session or something.

There was a problem in 2007 with virtual machines that if VMware does not have a mic installed, fake webcam did not know where to send audio. This was fixed in 2008.
Anyways, the latest version of fake webcam is rock solid and stable (of course, I am working on it since 6 years)
