I just wanted to comment on this with my experiences. I have tried all of the diets out there, none have worked, i.e. yoyo weights.
I believe the problem (for me) was that with dieting with plans such as atkins, weight watchers and so on, you lose a great deal of weight very fast. This didn't work for me, because I would get hungry and then gain weight once again.
But I started to change my lifestyle as opposed to 'dieting' - 10 weeks ago, eating only a little bit less than normal, and gradually phasing it in. Ive lost 17 lbs in 10 weeks - which doesn't sound like a massive number, but I have never been on a 'diet' so long in my lifetime. My new lifestyle is making me change how I eat (larger breakfasts, lunch, small dinner) and losing weight at a slow pace. I really believe now that I can do this and make the transformation happen.
My new 'lifestyle' does not include any exercise, I want to lose more weight before I start that, and my goal is to lose 60 lbs (which is my ideal weight) in 1 year. I am in no rush, and I don't want to pressure myself. I plan to start swimming in Feb 07.
I am sure your exercise and new lifestyle/dieting will be successful, and I wish you all the best - I wanted to share my experience
