Thank you to the Wright brothers
100 years ago today, the Wright brothers demonstrated a technology that for ever changed the world. This technology was off course the airplane. Without them, great achievements like Concorde would not have happened (hey it's been a few weeks since I moped about Concorde so had to get it in again)
This is one of the greatest inventions ever, and by them doing this I completed one of my most fun challenges, learning to fly. With all inventions, there are upsides and down sides and side effects, so for a bit of fun I thought I came up with some of mine:
Plus side
- Families, friends and countries are brought closer together
- Overnight shipping
- Mile high club
- Around the world in 80 Days, well on commercial flights you can do this in less than 48 hours now so you have time for a long holiday in the middle.
- Air shows
- Discovery Wings (TV channel)
- Scaring you mother by doing victory roles over the house with smoke pouring out the back of the plane, OK my brother and I are evil we admit it.
- Renting the British Airways 747 Flight Simulator at Heathrow for your Dad and Brother
- Getting your brother an 1 hour lesson in a PITTS special
- Air miles - Great for getting your relatives over to see you.
Down side
- Families, friends and countries are brought closer together, now my parents can visit me with a minimum of 7 hours notice, which is hardly enough time to tidy my place (Australia is starting to look very appealing), also some countries are better off left unvisited.
- Sick bags
- Check- in lines
- Mile High Club - nothing worse than a club where you're not a member ha ha
- Flight Attendants, OK once upon a time these people may have been fantasy symbols, but has anyone travelled lately?
- Pollution, noise etc. etc.
- Blue ice
- Air Traffic Controllers
- Flight Medicals - for pilots that is
Anyway thank you Wilbur and Orville, hhm don't their names sound like they should be a cookie brand? The Wilbur and Orville Chocolate chip cookie.
