How do you know if you're ready for that Sametime meeting?

Category

Very often, you'll be ready for a Sametime meeting, and then the customer calls you with those famous lines "uh I can't see anything", this can typically be due to a few issues, firewalls, JVM version, lack of JVM.  I'd been thinking about doing something for this ever since Lotus stopped shipping a tool with Sametime 1.5 that would do a test of visitors machines for readiness for Sametime.

Recently the topic came up again in the Business Partner forum, so I decided to get off my lazy bum and knock up the little test app.  What I need now are a few people to hit the test page and let me know if they get any errors etc.  You can find the page here

Sadly if you're accessing the internet through a Proxy, the network connection will always fail, this is because you need to have a signed applet to get that kind of access and I don't want to sign the applet for the test page, please respond with any comments.  If all goes well, I'll be posting it for download on our website shortly.

Gravatar Image1 - I've just tested with both IE after an SP2 install and with Firefox and both worked fine. Right now if something fails though, you have a More Info link that currently links to lotus.com. I imagine that's something that's just a placeholder right now.

Also, it said that my version of Sun JVM ( 1.4.2_05) was not compatible, but that works with my Sametime server (6.5.1) just fine. I'm assuming that's a test against Sametime 3.1 only?

Other than that, THANKS! Seems like a great app...

Gravatar Image2 - Your results were correct. I'm running on a Sametime 3.0 server, so I'm keeping the results honest. I have a JS file that contains constants, like which ports to test, if the server supports SUN and MS JVM, also what the server is called, sametime 3.0, eMeeting etc. It is also where you set the link for the more info, so you could set this to an internal site etc.

Thanks for testing!

Gravatar Image3 - Mine said all fine for IE but wrong JVM and no pop-ups for Firefox

Gravatar Image4 - Just tested mine with XP SP2 running IE, gave me an "x" on pop-ups. I followed your earlier advice and allowed 'pop-ops' from your Sametime server, it automatically refreshed and gave me full up Green.

Gravatar Image5 - Cali, you're using the SUN JVM right? and if you enabled popups for that site, that turns to a tick?

Gravatar Image6 - All green for me.....and I'm assured we are going through a proxy.

Gravatar Image7 - Thanks David, is your proxy set in your browser's connection settings?

Gravatar Image8 - Worked good here in the Pridelands on Firefox 0.9.3, except for the JVM.

Gravatar Image9 - Failed on JVM (correctly) and failed on connectivity. We go through a proxy firewall. Since so many people go through a proxy it would be good if this could be supported.

Gravatar Image10 - Fail on OS X using Safari and Firefox, all red crosses. No proxy, JVM installed, no surprises

Gravatar Image11 - I'm using windows 2000 SP4 and Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and everything was correct. All Green!

This will be a nice application to have!
Keep doing the good work!

Gravatar Image12 - Using our work's Sametime Share while using VPN from home has always failed miserably, however, using your little test site, it showed that the pop-up blocker was "x". I thought i had that resolved. But, I fixed that thanks to your test site and was able to apply the pop-up fix to my work's Sametime server address and it is all well now. THANK YOU for having this test available to us!!!

OS was Windows XP Professional SP2 and IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040308-2158 with Microsoft JVM enabled.
