How would you feel if Microsoft referred to Domino as Legacy Domino

Category
This morning I was on the Sametime 8.5 installation web conference call that IBM hosted.  During the call I heard IBMers refer to "Legacy Domino Components"  Seriously? Legacy?  This is IBM say this, not Microsoft.  honestly, think what you're saying, how it can be interpreted.  Please someone shoot around an email making this reference a big no no.  Lotus Knows Domino is not Legacy, but does IBM?  Now the people on these calls are smart people, they're in support, but if someone doesn't tell them not to refer to Domino as legacy then what do you expect?

Also whilst I'm having a gripe, would it kill IBM to say something like this "Contact ISSL or your IBM Business Partner" on these calls, instead of just saying "Contact ISSL".  Honestly, some days this partnership feels very one way.

Gravatar Image1 - I'm just guessing but they might be referring any pre-Xpages as legacy Domino.

Gravatar Image2 - @1 The thing is John, we shouldn't have to think what they are referring to. It creates the wrong impression.

XPages isn't used in Sametime 8.5 either.

Gravatar Image3 - If it is not legacy then what is the status of the classic Sametime Domino components?

Gravatar Image4 - So does that mean ISSL means "IBM Software Services for Legacy"?

Really, though it does make you wonder what these people are thinking and the seeds (and perceptions) they are sewing.

Gravatar Image5 - @3 well the classic meetings is not running on a legacy domino platform, they are running on the latest version of Domino. Also they should be referred to as classic Sametime, not Legacy Domino.

Also the Sametime Community components are still running on Domino, does that mean they're legacy? It's pretty clear at somepoint Domino will be gone from the Sametime stack though, it's just a matter of time.

Gravatar Image6 - @4 Good point Darren. Perhaps they know something inside IBM we don't know outside IBM.

Gravatar Image7 - The comment in the web conference was refering to the pre-Sametime 8.5 version of meetings (aka Sametime Classic). It was not implying that Domino in any way is legacy. Many of the customers that we have spoken to have not heard of Sametime classic, so we use this term to tell them that this is the older style of Sametime meetings for Sametime 8.0.2 and prior releases.

Gravatar Image8 - I think this is a case of IBM using a term internally that the outside world interprets in a different way. When I was at Iris/IBM, Steve Mills, IBM SVP of the Software Group, would refer to Domino as a "legacy" product -- even in front of Notes/Domino development team. When someone asked him why he used that term, his explanation was that "legacy" wasn't intended to be pejorative, it was the term that IBM used for "Horizon One" (H1) products. See { Link }

Gravatar Image9 - Thank you for the explanation. I would still call it legacy but now understand why you all do not agree.

Gravatar Image10 - @7 I would avoid using legacy all together, it has implications, and not good ones.

Gravatar Image11 - i have used Sametime 8.5, and sametime classic

i prefer meetings in the classic, the new version seems to be very plain

Gravatar Image12 - This reminds me of an editorial I just read in Redmond Magazine (An 'Independent' voice of the Microsoft community):

Check out the next to last paragraph. Needless to say, I shot him an email.

Gravatar Image13 - @11: Are you talking about how he listed Lotus as a dead company? I guess it depends on how you define "dead". Lotus was acquired by IBM in 1995. It no longer exists as a separate company. NeXT, another company he listed, was acquired by Apple in 1997. Lotus software lives on under IBM (at least Notes). NeXT software lives on at Apple, it was the basis for OS X.

How about his comment that Lotus Notes was "invented" by DEC? There's a grain of truth there (Len Kawell, one of the founders of Iris, wrote VAX Notes when he was at DEC) but VAX Notes was not literally "Lotus Notes".

Gravatar Image14 - Previous comment was in reference to @12.

Gravatar Image15 - hi, not sure if this is the right channel but gotta let somethings out..so here goes..

i attended a lotussphere event in kl yesterday. the ibmers had some quiz sessions and i won a voucher to sit for a lotus exam FOC! i was thrilled!!

today i came to the office and happily told a colleague about it and he went "you might as well forget about sitting for the paper, according to my ex-colleague whom i met at the event, they are migrating their notes apps to sharepoint"

i retorted with "don't think notes is going away, do you think sharepoint can do what lotus live does?"..well, our conversation may sound very amateurish not supported by statistics etc but the point is, that's quite the general feeling we get over here. it DOES seem like many apps are getting migrated to sharepoint.

i think microsoft is doing a better job in marketing their product. what do you guys think?

Gravatar Image16 - Unfortunately the invitation IBM sent out had the wrong time on it, and we joined as the call finished. It said 16:00 GMT and it was actually at 15:00 GMT.
If IBM can't manage daylight savings with their own products .......... need I say more.
