Which products or services do you recommend without hesitation?

Category

I was chatting with a friend last night and some how we got onto products that we would recommend without hesitation. So here they are, the products and services that come to mind of things I would happily recommend.

* Tivo - This is not the same as the DVR from your cable or satellite company.  Unless you've lived with both you really can't compare.
* Slingbox - A device that on paper doesn't do much but what it does do it does really well.
* Blue Man Group - Originally I didn't get the concept of the Blueman group and thought it sounded kind of stupid.  Fortunately a friend dragged me there a few years ago and I have thought it great ever since.  Blueman show is actually a big test if I'm dating someone, if they don't find that show funny, then honestly we're not going to be long term.
* Diskeeper - I love software that I can install and forget about.  I have this running on my PCs, I never have to think about it, but it's there in the background making sure my disks are defragmented and running the way they should.
* LogMeIn - LogMeIn saves me so much time when friends and family are having problems with their computers.  When I setup my Dad's machine I installed it straight away, now I can connect to his machine whenever he has a problem.
* GotVmail - Blogged about this when I was living in Paris, it works great and for a virtual company with employees that work from different locations or for employees that travel it works great.  Think of it as a Virtual PBX for an SMB but with lots of flexibility.
* C&J trailways - Local to me, but C&J trailways run an hourly bus service from Northern Mass and Southern NH to Boston.  The bus has free wifi and water, and the parking at their location is free.  So for less than the cost of 2 nights parking at Boston's Logan airport I can get to and from the airport stress and hassle free.  Kids under 18 ride free with an adult too.
* Aeroplanner - It doesn't replace a regular flight plan or weather briefing on the phone, but it makes my flight planning really easy.
* Netflix - Loving it more and more.  Netflix streaming and streaming in general are the way things will be in the future, Netflix tied into the Tivo for watching the movies is just great.
* Playstation3 - I'm not a big game player (anymore, I was as a kid), but the Playstation 3 is fantastic.  I tend to use it more as a mediaplayer than I do as a games machine, but it's great at all of them.  It's a state of the art Bluray player, it can play Divx and a number of other movie formats, your Music collection etc.  Plus Sony issue regular updates to the device that add new functionality all the time oh and it's a fantastic games machine with high end graphics and processing.  I highly recommend Buzz for a fun game with friends.
* Firebug - Firebug is a plugin for FireFox, if you do any kind of web development or Javascript Development this is the plugin to get and it's free!
* Maynards Wine Gums - Don't go for the cheapo imitations Maynards is the only brand when it comes to Wine Gums.  I wish the US population would discover wine gums so that they would get sold here.

What products or services do you recommend without hesitation?

Gravatar Image1 - Pretty much anything that Apple sells.

Gravatar Image2 - Apple.TV - streams my videos from the loft drobo to my downstairs TV

Airport Extreme "Airtunes" - I have my 12 year old Denon stereo set up with speakers in every room downstairs and the kitchen. I can now play music from the Drobo connected Macbook in the loft to any room in the house. Can also play from any Mac in the house or the Apple.TV

Ocado - home food delivery (used to be partnered with Waitrose). I've tried the others and Ocado is the best, book an hour delivery slot with 24hrs notice. Change an order up to 10 hrs before delivery. Never late. Never wrong. Fruit and Veg always fresh. I trusted them enough to deliver all my Xmas food shopping including the turkey on xmas eve at 7am. They bag your food in colour coded bags (green for fridge, purple for cupboard and orange for freezer) and carry it all into the kitchen for you even if you life up a few flights of stairs.

Amazon Prime. I use it for home and for work. I pay 50 quid a year and have 3 other people registered who can also order. Unlimited next day shipping free of charge. I sit at home in an evening, order a book online and get it next day in the office at no cost.

iPod Genius - I have 7000+ tracks on my iPod and Genius lets me choose a single track then it creates a 25 item playlist of similar music. When my music taste runs from 1930s musicals to jazz to folk , R&B and rock, it's fantastic for connecting stuff together I never would have thought of. I actually upgraded to a new iPod just to get it because I was fed up trying to think up what to listen to out of all my music. Works in iTunes too so is great combined with my airtunes (see above).

Bare Minerals makeup. My mother bought this powder foundation for herself several year's ago and to my shame both my sister and I now use it. It's lightweight, easy to apply and doesn't make it look like you're wearing make-up (one for you there Carl).

Tivo - especially now i've been forced to move to the hated Sky Digital in the UK just for HD. I've had Sky for 2 months and am switching back.

Garmin Nuvi - I have a 4 year old 350 with all Europe and N.America maps and it has never failed me (even when I got lost in the woods recently)

Marriott Residence Inns - clean, good value, free wife, plenty of cable channels, free breakfast (and a free book of mormon with every reservation!)

Gravatar Image3 - I'm not sure what subconscious tick made me claim that Marriott's come with 'free wife' instead of 'free wifi but they certainly don't. No no no not at all.

Gravatar Image4 - Inverawe Smoked Salmon. Quite simply the best smoked Salmon I have ever tasted.

A word of warning though. After you have tasted this stuff you'll never be able to eat any other brand.

Aawh man, I'm going to have to order some now... Emoticon

Gravatar Image5 - @2 Free wife? I can see my parents sending me a voucher to the Marriot Residence Inn now .

Gravatar Image6 - Those Maynard wine gums sound good. I will have to locate some in the Boston MA area. Made me think of those yummy Wispa bars which used to be available in the U.S..

Recommendation : Carbonite - Online backup software that is easy to use. Has a nice admin interface for managing the computer that you are backing up and a simple way to restore backups to a new computer. Did I mention that it is easy to use?

Gravatar Image7 - @6 Some stop and shops and starmarkets in the Boston area have a "world foods" aisle, you can often find wine gums there. Or for your Wispa and Wine Gums, you can go to Amandas Union Jacks on Route 1 South in Danvers.

Gravatar Image8 - @2 - you mean that wasn't my wife? Oh crap...

Gravatar Image9 - I wholeheartedly agree with Logmein and Netflix .... my life would not be the same without it.
We can even look at Neflix live on the TV by using my son's XBox to stream out instant movies ... I love it. I just watched the whole series "All Creatures Great and Small" on it and am almost done with "As Time Goes By" - I love it that the BBC has so many series released on Netflix!!!! Gravatar Image10 - Just a couple I can think of on the spot:

1. Apple Mac
2. VMWARE (fusion, workstation, esx)
3. Apple iWorks
4. iPod
5. Season ticket to the Super 14
6. Beer
7. Any software Preemptive creates (shameless marketing pitch) - lol

Gravatar Image11 - @10 Good list Adam. How the hell did I miss VMWare.

Gravatar Image12 - cirque du soleil

Gravatar Image13 - Wise Potato Chips (Northeast US). Even their bag-to-bag quality control is dodgy, but when you buy a good bag of Wise chips there's no comparison. They're lighter in weight but darker on average than most chips. One of the few food categories I'll always pay whatever it costs.

Gravatar Image14 - Without a doubt, GoodSync is on my top 10. It effortlessly keeps directories, drives, whatever you can point to, synchronized. Either on time basis, on change, on bootup/shutdown. We have 3 pc's, a macbook, and a buffalo drive all in sync (and providing backups to each other). Love it. { Link }
