What's up with Jessie

Category

A couple of weeks ago, some people noticed this picture on Flickr and wondered what was up with Jessie.
Poor Jessie

Well the story behind the very fetching Elizabethan collar is that Jessie had stitches in her nose, a couple of the left side and a couple on the right, as can be seen here (hopefully you've already eaten lunch)
Jessie's Stitches

She hadn't been in an accident or anything, but for a number years Jessie has had nose issues, where literally every now and again chunks of her nose would come off, not bogies, but parts of her actual nose.  As you can imagine it's not a pretty sight, and I'd discussed it with the vet numerous times who basically said it doesn't seem to bother her and unless it gets much worse don't worry about it.  I'd been with that for a few years, but a few months ago I changed vet and I asked about the nose again.  I told him what the other vet said, and he said I'm pretty lucky in that Labs tend not to complain too much, but most other breeds would not be happy about their nose problems at all.   I have been feeling a bit guilty, as Jessie hasn't been bothered by the stitches in her nose at all, and I actually removed the collar after 24 hours,  which indicated to me, that pain in her nose is just a norm and she doesn't even worry about it anymore, which is not the way it should be.

He laid out a few plans that we would use to try and resolve the issue.  The first plan was to put her on really strong antibiotics and some special nose cream for a few weeks, if that didn't work we'd then do a biopsy.  Sadly the antibiotics and cream didn't work so Jessie went in for a biopsy, the biopsy involved Jessie being heavily sedated and two samples being removed from her nose, on the left and right side, hence the stitches, and the sample being sent away for analysis.

The results came back today, and we now know for sure that Jessie's nose problem is one of two things.  The most likely is Discoid Lupus and there is a slim chance it is something else called liver skin syndrome.  Apparently the liver skin syndrome is much less likely, but is also deadly, so tomorrow little Jessie is going back to the vets for blood test work to confirm it isn't liver skin syndrome, and then if the results are ok she will be started on treatment for Discoid Lupus.

So thanks to everyone that enquired about Jess, she's fine and hopefully will soon have a shiny wet nose, versus a crusty dried up nose.  I'll be sure to post when I have more results.
