Missing Billions...

Category

The BBCs Panorama show is an investigative news show in the UK.  It tends to cover serious subjects and one's that "the majority" would find boring.  They do some great investigate journalism (I think that's an oxymoron in the US media), tonight their show is about Billions that are unaccounted for in Iraq.  I didn't even realise there was a gag order on this stuff in the US.  This is no small amount of money.  Imagine what $23 Billion could do for the US school system, or developing renewable energy sources for example.

Hopefully it will be on iPlayer and I can catch it tomorrow.

You have to wonder why they need a gag order with reporting like this though:

Gravatar Image1 - $23B? Keep going... the number is much, much higher. Apparently the US printed and shipped an entire cargo plane of US cash to Iraq after toppling the government. Duffle bags full of the stuff were being tossed off the backs of hummers during the chaos that followed. PBS Frontline documented this in one of their stories on the invasion of Iraq. Hey, freedom is messy... and expensive!

Gravatar Image2 - Amazing programme, incredible that the US Govt. shipped over that amount of money and distributed it in such a chaotic manor. And as for paying a US contractor on the ground with $2m in cash every month - very strange. Clearly local costs had to be met, but paying the entire contract value in cash locally Emoticon say no more! Emoticon

Gravatar Image3 - I know what happened to the money. The US gave it to the good people of Israel to reduce Lebanese population using cluster bombs. An Israeli spokesman argued that cluster bombs are more efficient than birth control.
