I want Sling Box on the iPhone, should Apple build it?

Category

I was thinking last night about the various posts about Domino support on the iPhone.  Lots of people seem to be blaming Apple, but I just don't see it.  Think about this for a minute, there are quite a few Sling Box customers out there, Sling Box have players for various mobile devices, palm, windows Mobile, CE etc.  Who should I push to develop Sling Player on the iPhone, Apple? What do they know about the Slingbox internals? Harassing Apple for Domino support is a good distraction but I don't think it will achieve much.  IBM is the one responsible for Domino.  If I wanted Sametime on the iPhone, would I be pushing Apple to build it?

I understand your point, and it is valid.

However, the issue, as I see it, isn't so much that we want Apple to build complete PIM client for the iPhone that will interface with Domino. Rather, we would like to see Apple & IBM Lotus work together to build / publish a full API (not just a simple SDK) for both the iPhone PIM capabilities and the Domino server stuff. If they can do that, then we, the community, can build / support pretty much anything for PIM, while maintaining / respecting the Domino Security model. This could be Open Source or a private product (such as BES); it doesn't really matter to me (or, I'm assuming, most of the community). It is the supported & published API that matters.

Infact they have already built a 'demo' on a jailbreaked iPhone but were waiting for the full SDK before releasing it to the public.

IBM, on the otherhand, cannot built a fully integrated mail app with the SDK. The SDK does not give any interface into the iPhones mail application nor does it provide a pushmail entrypoint anywhere on the iPhone. For true mail/cal/contact integration both Apple and IBM need to work together and have it built directly into the iPhone software. The SDk cannot do this alone.

So for SlingPlayer, talk to SlingMedia, for Notes mail.cal and contacts you need to talk to both apple and IBM.

Gravatar Image3 - So was Apple all over MS or was MS all over Apple to make it happen for them? We have to wonder too, does Apple see the need. I have not yet seen a publication mention that Domino integration is missing in the iPhone 2.0 announcements, just that Apple now supports the Enterprise because Exchange is supported. I often wonder if our community as as big as it thinks it is.

Perhaps MS have an API for easily accessing the calendar, mail, contacts information in Exchange? (keyword being easily). What is the ActiveSync equivalent for Domino?

Try going to the IBM site, searching for information on how to get information from Domino's calendar, contacts and mail. Try finding the Domino ISV support team information, try finding ISV support on the IBM website.

Also try the same thing at the Microsoft site, obviously for Exchange not Domino.

Do it fairly, imagine you are an ISV, who has had very little experience with Domino or Exchange, but have been tasked with building integration for your product.
