My Dad wanted a website

Category
To share pictures and memories etc. with his old Royal Air Force buddies. He has no idea what HTML is (maybe he knows it as a file extension), he has no clue how to FTP files to a server, his eyes glaze over when you give him something like FrontPage, and is most comfortable in Ami Pro and Freelance Graphics, but if you need your System 370 repairing or have problems with your old stacks of magnetic doughnut memory, he's your man. So we needed to come up with a way that it would be easy for him to:
  1. Edit pages, easy to add bulleted lists, pictures etc.
  2. Add/Remove Pages
  3. Add, Remove, Re-order the menu items
  4. No need to learn how to FTP files, or understand image, css subdirectories.

Yes we ended up using Domino, and the Notes client. He already has a Notes client on his machine at home from a while back, so we built a simple db for managing the pages and the menu choices, and away he went. The results can be found at www.91stEntryRAFLocking.

Click this movie to see how he can add a menu item and a new page. The DB was built in a couple of hours, so excuse the UI and colour choices.

If anybody wants the template, post a comment and I'll post it.

Gravatar Image1 - I have done the same thing, many times. I have developed it in to a site that can be administered in a web browser. I have also developed the content and menu creation into the same form. This seems to work better for most users. Good work. Quick turn around on development.

Gravatar Image2 - What's the best hosting site for this sort of thing?

Everything I've found is very expensive, especially considering you can set up a basic website for a family member and get it hosted for about £20 a year.

To set up a Domino site like Darin's talking about, the deals look like being rather more expensive, which means I've settled on the pure HTML cheap set-up.

Any pointers would be good to look into.

Gravatar Image3 - I'd like the template if you don't mind posting it or shoot me an email with it.

Thanks,
