Sametime 7.5 performance

Category
Since Sametime 7.5 shipped and actually even during the Sametime 7.5 beta, there has been much discussion with regard to the performance of the Sametime 7.5 client. It was a common discussion at the Collaboration University, and has also recently become a topic of discussion in the Sametime Forum. It's important to remember that the Sametime 7.5 client is now a powerful communications platform for building real-time aware applications, not just IM, but do end users understand or appreciate that? Will Microsoft start promoting LCS as just IM against Sametime, the way they promoted Outlook as just email against Notes? What feedback have you received? What has your impression been? For me, the extra features and benefits out weigh the long load time and slow chat window appearance, how about you? Take part in the new poll...

From the previous poll, 63% have their Peanut Butter sandwiches without butter, and 37% have butter too.

Gravatar Image1 - 711 729 are the codec standard used for VoIP. With our VoIP we get about 100k for a call on the network with no tolerance for packet loss.

Skype and GoogleTalk use an ILBC from Gips Technoligy that is about 7k on the network with up to 30% packet loss.
You now know why Skype is so good.

The good news is that IBM have also licensed this Codec so expect some great VoIP usage.
If anyone does some network profiling for sametime 7.5 VoIP then I would be interested in its comparisons to Skype.

The 7.5 Gateway is only going to be doing IM form day one but at a recent conference I was sitting behind an IBM presenter as he did his mail.
IBM have had meeting with Skype so watch this space.

Gravatar Image2 - I don't mind the performance of 7.5 at all. I run a pretty modest machine, and find that the client fires up in an acceptable timeframe -- chat windows are pretty responsive too.

I'm sure some tweaks should / could / will be made, but overall I'm happy. Certainly, compared with other Eclipse-based apps I have on my machine, ST is one of the fastest ones.

Gravatar Image3 - Eerst Europa Doelstellingen: De Ci2i Verzekering (Ci2i) zal het nummer een gebrandmerkte pan Europese commoditized online verzekeringsmakelaar door 2010 zijn.

Gravatar Image4 - The initial load time is not an issue. Sure it takes a while, but most people only start the application once per boot-up. My issue with Sametime is the slow chat performance. My entire computer seems to lock down for about 2 seconds everytime someone sends me a chat message. Conversely, when I want to send a chat message, the application once again takes 2 or 3 seconds to load the chat window. This makes Sametime burdensome.

I'm sure the VoIP and video conferencing technology is great, but if I'm not using it why should I take the performance hit each and every time I open a chat window?

I've had Sametime 7.5 for two weeks now and I have decided to back to using notes-buddy. Technology be damned. If people are going to interrupt me, I want them to do it quickly so I can get back to work.

Maybe if IBM came up with a configuration page to disable some unused/unwanted features in an effort to enhance performance I'd be happier.
