The cost of running prisons...
Category None
I heard on the radio the other day that the it costs the US $1000 per day for each prisoner kept in jail. A truly amazing amount, how can it cost that much? Anyway, I am often of the belief that people in Jail get way too many perks, If we have no intention of rehabilitating offenders and giving them a skill before they leave prison, then we should offer prison services of Victorian standards, ie no TV, no phone calls, nothing comfortable, give them a bed of nails, you get the idea. Anyway, if it's costing $1000 a day to keep a criminal, why not off-shore it? Surely we could ship criminals with sentences longer than 2 years off-shore to somewhere like India? The overheads would be much less there?

That's very close to something called Deportation, which we tried. The main problem seems to be that after a while, they come back and beat you thoroughly at your own sports. Again, and again, and again.
Oh, and they have a nasty habit of exporting cheap, low-quality soap operas back to you as well.
If that doesn't tell you that this is a bad idea, then go ahead. But I strongly advise that you learn from our mistakes...
