Why is a computer numeric keypad different to an ATM and telephone?

Category
Recently my bank merged with another bank (for about the 6th time since I moved here), I use their online banking service to pay my bills etc. When they merged they switched to the other banks online system, ok no problems there. In the change they changed how they handled passwords for the system. Previously the bank would take the text representation of a password and automatically convert it to the equivalent number format. So for those of us who remember their pin by the text representation we now have to remember the number, no problem I thought as I know my pin with finger memory. Now just point me at the keypad and I'm away. Well that's great, but ATMs (and telephones) have their numeric keypad in a different layout. ATMs go from 1 in the top left to 9 in the bottom right, whilst computer keyboards go from 7 in the top left to 3 in the bottom right. So finger memory it turns out can be a real hindrance when trying to punch your pin into the computer keypad...

Gravatar Image1 - Funny. I have a similar complaint about my TIVO channel screens.
Let's say you're watching channel 11, and hit channel up. You go to channel 12.
However, when viewing the TIVO channel menu screen, and hit channel up, you actually move (or page) in reverse order, to channel 10.
I wish there was a preference to have the menu in descending order. Time to start hacking my TIVO?
