Google Desktop Sidebar and Google Talk

Category
Last night I noticed the Google Desktop Sidebar, first thing that came into my head was Lotus SmartCenter. Nice to think that Google are now shipping a product that offers similar functionality to a product Lotus shipped about 10 years ago. It's scary how many things Lotus did right, but failed to execute.

Also to note are the rumours around Google Talk, looks like the rumours over the last year or so may finally come true... http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-google23aug23,0,1288856.story It will be interesting to see how close I was a year ago when I was guest blogger on the Corante Get Real site.

I do think Google may have a hard time taking over from the likes of AOL IM, Yahoo and MSN, purely because people already have IM accounts there. I have a GMail account, but do I ever use it?

Gravatar Image1 - I made the exact same association! The longer I use it, the more it feels like SmartCenter

Gravatar Image2 - At the end it is critical mass that will determine Googles IM success. If I can reach all my contacts through Google IM, that would be the service I use....
And by selecting Jabber it would open the possibility, that Google would syndicate my "other" IM IDs...
So I log into Google IM and have all contacts online without the need for a multi-protocol client. Add Voice/video integration and it will take off.

Gravatar Image3 - Ahh, Jabber/XMPP vs. SIP/SIMPLE again becomes an issue.
