What is Instant TeamSessions?

Category
Yep since my posting yesterday a few people have been asking me what is it? What does it do? So here it is, my answer to that question. Instant TeamSessions is the bee's knees. OK, seriously what is it? Excuse me if I sound a bit markety here, but I'll try and keep it realistic and not spin it too much, as this is my blog and not my website, so you pretty much know how I am. So the product came about like most products, by keeping an ear to the ground and listening to customers needs, as it turns out, we started hearing a consistent set of needs at a few customers right around the same time (always helps when you hear something within a few weeks). Anyway, hearing this trend we started to poke around a bit more, and basically the simple/minimum lets get started requirements that came back from our design partners were:
  • Persistent chat - the ability for Sametime to provide chat history when people enter places, N-Way chats
  • Time stamps - See when the chat happened, with whom etc. Seems like a small request, but was high up on the requirements list from every partner.
  • No client install - Browser based, nothing to install on desktop machines
  • Must make use of existing Sametime infrastructure and directory services

  • As time went on, and as the customers used early builds and as we ourselves started to use the product internally, with our developers spread across different timezones and regions, we began to see other things that we'd like to have in the product, we'd check these with the design partners for being valid in their environments and Instant TeamSessions Version 1 was born.

Instant TeamSessions basically allows companies to create secure persistent chat places. These places, can be created much in the same way that Quickplaces are created today, In that you can say who can access the place, who's moderator, and how much of the persistent chat history is displayed when a user enters the place (you wouldn't want to bring down 300 days worth of archive chat for example). Some of the Key features are:
    • Persistent Chat Rooms - Easily create and manage Lotus Sametime based persistent chat rooms.
    • Secure - Authenticate users based on personal login information. Each chat session may have a unique access control list.
    • Related Content - Store related content for the community such as task lists, documents, and bookmarks.
    • Alerts - Create personal alerts and get notified base on keywords in the discussion.
    • Leverages IBM Instant Messaging/Sametime - Works with Sametime 3.0 and later.
    • Buddylist Support - Access to your existing Sametime buddylist within TeamSessions.
    • Chat History - Participants automatically receive chat history when they enter a session.
    • Browser based - No need to visit desktops to install application.
    • Secure and Encrypted Chat - Authentication based control of who can enter sessions, encrypted chat for when security matters.
    • Regulatory Compliance Archiving - Works seamlessly with your existing corporate compliance archiving software. Such as Instant IMtegrity
    • Share Rich Content - Share files, notes, bookmarks with other members in the session
    • Collaborate - Start and attend Instant Meetings
    • Transfer Files - Use Sametime's file transfer to send files between users
Hhmm, might be easier if I just show you....Click here to watch the movie. 13Mb so please be patient.

Gravatar Image1 - You can add one more company (but not customer) that agrees with your base requirements. IN FACT, I'm in the midst of rolling out a 'persistent chat' application that is 75% of what you've described. In the absense of a Sametime-based capability like this for several years, we rolled our sleeves up, bolted a Domino application and Sametime capabilities via the Java API together to come up with a very similar application. I'd like to connect with you at Lotusphere to compare notes.

Gravatar Image2 - Cool Tim. Come find me at our booth.

Gravatar Image3 - "Persistent Chat Rooms" AH! At last! Good to see this happen!
