This posting URGENT: Inconsistent behavior adding users to a place, whilst a serious questions cracks me up. Why? Well a couple of reasons, one the posting was made by an IBMer in North Carolina, and secondly because it marks the issue as Urgent. Seriously, if you're an IBMer and you have an urgent issue, don't you have some other means to get your issue addressed than a posting to a public forum? Also anybody that frequents the forum, will know that adding the word URGENT to an issue tends to get you more flames than help.
With regard to the issue they are experiencing, I have not seen this myself, but I had a similar call from Rob Novak saying he was seeing something like this a few weeks ago. But this person is using Sametime 3.0 which is about 4 years old now, so should probably consider trying a later version...

Sametime 3 is only about 2 years old now. If I remember correctly, it was launched in September/October 2002.
