Been using the new HP laptop for a couple of days

Category
here are my initial impressions. PCs come with way too much junk on them, how many music players does someone need? First thing I did was format the machine, and clean off the installed apps. I know what I want, and I know what I like, and most of the stuff I didn't want. The screen turned out to have a much much higher resolution than advertised, I guess they must have upgraded the model. The resolution is 1680x1020 which on a widescreen layout which is great if you ever want to watch a DVD. The DVD burner works as advertised, and it's nice to have that available for backing up key projects. It's also nice to have the 80Gb drive, I was always hitting the limit on my old 20Gb. The Laptop itself is not much heavier than my Thinkpad, but the power adapter is about 3 times the size, it feels like I'm carrying a brick around with me. The laptop is also wider than my Thinkpad, so had to find a laptop bag that was wide enough to accept it, fortunately I had an old Dell one that works. Performance is great, although I haven't tried WASD yet. Flight Simulator looks great on the wide screen, so I'll have something to do on long flights. The built in wireless works great, but also has an ethernet socket when working somwhere that doesn't have wireless, and if I (or even a neighbour) ever have a g network at home it will work with it. The keyboard feels like it's set a little too far back and too high, the distance is obviously due to the touchpad and the height is probably to make room for the huge fans underneath the laptop, it does make it not as comfortable to work with as the Thinkpad, but I may get used to it. It's a bit like when I was a kid and you've move up a size in violin, the first few days your chin would hurt, but then you'd get used to it. I am tending to turn of the touchpad and using my usb trackball. The touchpad is ok, but no where as nice to use as the Thinkpad nipple. What I like about the nipple versus the touchpad (as the bishop said to the actress fnar fnar), is that I can move the mouse from one side of the screen to the other with never lifting my finger, with the touchpad you keep having to move your finger back to the start point, a bit like continuously lifting the mouse. Here's a question, how do the touchpads work? I can move my finger over it and the mouse moves, if I move a pencil rubber (eraser) across the mouse doesn't sense it. Is it a temperature thing? Most of my work has been moved across successfully using Powerquest Drive Image, but I still have a few more apps to install. Overall though, pretty pleased with it, plus it's sparkly and new!!!

Gravatar Image1 - The touchpad works via capacitance - see here for similar theory http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question716.htm

Gravatar Image2 - "Your finger holds an eletrical charge that can be measure in the tolerance of the touchpad. The touchpad has a wire mesh underneath the part you actually touch that can sense your fingers electrical charge. When you move your finger it can sense the moment accross the 'mesh' and it will then send the signal to your computer. The reason why it works when you use paper is because paper isn't a strong enough insulator to disrupt the field that your finger gives off. The reason erasers and metal pieces don't work is because they don't have their own field (at least in the same range as your finger) so the touchpad is not affected by them.

It really is an ingenious design. Confusing as heck unless you know a little bit about electronics and fields... but its still cool. I hope that info helped." -- Dave
