Offshore Services

Category
With all the media talk about Offshore services, I've noticed that lawyers have been very quiet about it all. Which is surprising, as surely this is the net big area to be outsourced abroad.

As a small business I can see huge benefits of dealing with a lawyer to check contracts that doesn't charge $150 an hour for picking up the phone. We can also expect many other jobs to go overseas, tax auditors, if we're lucky Immigration may get outsourced to remove some of their backlog, and if we're really lucky we can outsource government.

Gravatar Image1 - I believe that lawyers have to be licensed in the state in which they practice, etc. So if you used offshore legal counsel and then something went wrong, you'd be screwed, have no recourse.

That said, E-loan is currently doing some of its mortgage paperwork offshore, and apparently offers customers the choice of having all their paperwork processed in the states for a higher fee or having some if it processed offshore for a lower fee. Over 80% of the customers pick the offshore processing, which is interesting. I guess it's OK if other people's jobs go overseas, just so long as your own doesn't...
