Windows menu keys...

Category

The new HP laptop has the special Windows keys on the keyboard, the IBM laptop did not have these opting instead for larger Alt keys.  As a keyboard junky I already know the shortcut keystrokes so the Windows keys are pretty useless.  I had hit a problem though where I would catch the windows key instead of the alt key, as usual a quick Google search finds the answer and this nifty little utility to remap the  key to something that I can use.  So I just mapped it to be another alt key.

Gravatar Image1 - Interesting - I'm no keyboard junkie but apparently we have some in our company - boy did they complain like hell when we replaced their Compaq notebooks with Thinkpads! No Windows keys! *the end of the world is nigh!* they were heard to protest loudly!

Gravatar Image2 - Don't tell the IBM service department, but the reason they had to replace my Thinkpad keyboard yesterday was because I was fed up with looking at crumbs and stuff between the keys, so I decided to apply our Dyson vacuum cleaner to the keyboard. I rescued all the keys that came off from the dust cyclinder, but a couple wouldn't reattach. Ooops. So, a lesson learnt... use the brush attachment.

Gravatar Image3 - The Windows key itself has some shortcuts associated with it. Windows + E opens up your local file explorer, for instance. There's a whole bunch of them that are genuinely useful.

Gravatar Image4 - Hehehe Darren! Actually I did this on a machine the other day - I was cleaning up a unit here that was destined for a new manager - I was using a brush but managed to flick a couple of keys off. Unfortunatley the tiny little white nylon slips broke in both cases so it was new keyboard time
