1 - For me it was the "No skilled staff to handle a WebSphere/DB2 environment?" It would be one thing if there were a top down decision in a large IT department but it's another thing if it is will start small and grow.

In the beginning, the perceived value of chat and awareness took a while. Later, the perceived value of web conferencing developed. Now, it's the perceived value of broadcasts (chatrooms have value but need to be integrated into a context).

If the deployment of chatrooms and broadcast were as easy as a checkbox during the install, then it would nearly always get installed and the users would start using the features and the value would grow.

To some extent, its the "chicken or the egg" - if "kicking the tires" requires a large investment, then it's tough to justify until there recognized value and recognized value only happens after it gets installed and used.

2 - we will use finally the notes 8 embedded one. It great to have all functionality within the notes client directly, without running any external app.
Why do you guys use the connect client when everything is running in the notes client already???

3 - @2 if by "you guys", you mean me, I have both Notes 8 and Notes 7 installed on my machine. For the majority of work I do, I prefer Notes 7. I still can't get used to the modified key strokes in Notes 8 and prefer the consistency and speed of Notes 7.

When I'm doing work for customers running Notes 8 clients, obviously I use the Notes 8 client, otherwise for me personally Notes 8 does not make me more productive, it actually slows me down, so my personal preference is still to use Notes 7. That is in no way saying that Notes 7 is the best choice for everyone, I am just saying for me personally with 18 years usage and experience of Notes, I find Notes 7 more suitable.

I use the Sametime standalone client, as that way I can switch between different notes versions without having to shut down sametime. Also Notes is still not a very good mutithreaded client, so I avoid running Sametime in Notes, as there are times you may have a notes dialog open and you can no longer respond to Sametime IMs.

4 - uuh okay, I thought we were discussing about the complete environment and not only the "admin computers".

5 - I have had locations where the client has both integrated and connect clients running, because they needed it for the MS Office integration. Personally I have a 7.5.1 AND a 8.0.1 cleint installed but I never use my integrated Notes client .. to slow like Carl said, and I switch IDs allot ... that kills any IM log-in

6 - For me, it's all about performance. Carl makes two points that really are true for my daily "end user" experience - "Notes basic" is faster and lighter on resources than "Notes standard" and Notes "threadedness" regularly messes with Sametime chats. The only motivation for using Notes Standard with integrated Sametime is the fact it will save my chat history to my mail file. All of this is moot for Linux since I pretty much have to run Notes Standard so there, I use the whole integrated splat.
