Instant TeamMessenger for Office video

Category
So today I was having a chat with someone I hadn't spoken to for a couple of years and they were wondering whatever happened to Instant TeamMessenger for Office. So I started explaining to them about customer reaction, market wasn't ready etc. so we never took the product out of Beta. Anyway, they said they were interested in seeing it, so I created a quick video of the last build of Instant TeamMessenger.

It's important to remember the build you see in this video is from January 2004, so this is code is almost 3 years old. It's also important to remember that when we built this IBM/Lotus was doing very little with Sametime as the future was Workplace IM, the Sametime client hadn't been updated in eons and the client was a closed environment. Which basically means we had to build the client you see in the video from scratch, buddylist, meeting services, chat window etc.

In this video I don't show everything this client did, just the high level stuff, for example I don't show the persistent chat interface in it that interacted with the Instant TeamSessions server. I often wonder if Sametime had offered their plug-in model back then how much more quickly we could have developed this product, rather than having to spend 80% of the time reinventing a wheel IBM/Lotus already had and also how different the market acceptance could have been, as one of the big factors stopping customers from potentially deploying this solution, was that they didn't want to deploy another client alongside Sametime (which they didn't have to, but that was the way it was perceived), sadly they also expected it free.

The functionality you see in this video was offered for Office 2000, XP and 2003, so all major versions were supported. Anyway enough rambling, see it for yourself, here it is the Instant TeamMessenger for Office video, recorded today, with code last compiled Jan 2004.

I put this on GoDaddy hosting so I can see what performance is like. Please leave a comment letting me know how quick or slow the download was.

P.S. I can't believe how bad my accent is getting...

Gravatar Image1 - What happens when you load multiple file in one of the applications?

Gravatar Image2 - @1 It appears as another file in the tree view. So if there were two documents open in Word, it would show as a second document under the word icon.

Gravatar Image3 - The download was very impressive - took just 15 seconds

Gravatar Image4 - 25 seconds
