Statue of Liberty and Manhattan from 700 feet.

Category
Sure you can see Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty from 0 feet if you walk, but where's the fun in that.  My brother is currently visiting, and as you may know from previous posts, we are both enthusiastic hobby pilots.  So this year we decided to fly down to Manhattan (New York, New York) and do something called the VFR corridor. Where you can fly down and up the Hudson river at low altitude, without requiring any air traffic control clearance.  This is not the first time we did the flight, as we also did it back in 1997 on New Years eve, and friends can see the pictures from that on my Facebook page

Back then, we had two cameras, a 35mm APS with a 36 roll film, and a VHS8 camcorder.  We managed to capture about 30 minutes of flying before the battery went dead and took close to the 36 photos.  This time round, we took over 800 photos (yes we may have over done it) and 5+ hours of video, with video shots from inside and outside the plane.  The Videos were taken with a GoPro HD and a ContourHD with integrated GPS.  The GoPro performed flawlessly whilst the ContourHD has proven a bit, ehm, shit.  All in all, we had approximately  80+ Gigabytes of memory cards on board (that's a lot of floppy disks).  The Go Pro had a 32Gb card in it, which would record about 4 hours, but the battery only lasts about 2 hours, and it's a little tricky trying to change the battery in a camera attached to the bottom of a plane so we decided to just leave it till we landed.

The GoPro was attached to the underside of the plane and the ContourHD was attached to the side of my brothers headset, he looked very Borg like with it turned on.  We set the Go Pro to capture at 720p @60 frames per second, so that it had a wider viewing angle and could be used for slow motion.

So with all that technology did we manage to capture any cool shots, or make any videos?  We certainly did!  The photos have been reduced in size (otherwise they would still be uploading sometime into next week) and posted to Flickr as a set, which can be found here in the Hudson River Flight set.

As for the videos, we have a few posted on Vimeo

This one has the takeoff from Westchester, with the sights and sounds from the inside and outside.

This one is the entire length of the recording from outside, about 2 hours in 15 minutes.  In HiDef, so it can be paused to check out what's underneath.

This was a tester video we took of the Staten Island Ferries

I hope you enjoy the photos and videos as much as we enjoyed taking them.

Gravatar Image1 - Amazing videos! Great idea!

Gravatar Image2 - Outstanding, thanks Carl. I was on a commercial flight that went straight up Manhattan a few years ago, looking directly down at the hole which was ground zero. This was similarly amazing. With Roku I watched it in HD on the big screen.
