Been well over a year since I cancelled my cable TV subscription

Category
Back in April of 2009 I cut my cable TV chord.   Apart from 1 month in the summer when I had it reinstated for friends that were staying at my house during my trip to the World Cup.

Since then, more boxes have appeared with more companies claiming you can cut the cord, apple and Google TV come to mind. There is also Roku that was around for Netflix users long before I cut the cord, and I have to say I feel bad for Roku, their box has done what apple TV does and more for a long time, but sadly very few people know about it, but apple announces basically the same thing and you'd think Jesus had returned to walk the earth.  Anyway, I don't own a Roku and I havent' bought an apple TV.

My savings to date have been over $2,000 and I managed that by having the following setup
* An antenna on the roof for local programming, remember I'm in the middle of know where, I can only get about 10 channels, but half of those are in true 1080p High Def
* Buying a license to Playon.tv which gives me access to Hulu content (no hulu plus needed), ABC, CBS, Comedy Central and tonnes of others, This works great with the Playstation 3 my main media player and also the IPhone and IPad, even when travelling.
* A Slingcatcher for live TV shows that on in Britain where I have a slingplayer on my brothers TV connection.  I also have access to other friends slingplayers who have shared details which is kind of sweet.  To be honest though I have found I have rarely used this.
* Netflix best value around.  Can you believe I've had a netflix account for over 10 years!
* VPN account, this has proven the best value, for about 40-50 bucks you can get a VPN account that can appear as if it is from different countries.  Using this on the iPad and the Playstation gives me access to the wonderful programming on BBC iPlayer

This works for me, your mileage may vary.

Gravatar Image1 - 1080p over the air?? How much spectrum do you get in the mountains there?! You try doing that back in Blighty mate, no netflix, no hulu. Traditional broadcasters are tying the market up and moving into streaming.

Gravatar Image2 - Turns out 1080p is incorrect, it's 1080i

Gravatar Image3 - Hi, just read your note about vpn, ps3 and bbc iplayer. Which VPN service do you use? I googled and some of the results returned to me looked kind-of shady. Just looking for a recommendation. Thanks!

Gravatar Image4 - @3 I use Witopia.net
