Microsoft invented Page Up and Page Down key functionality!

Category

That's right, Microsoft has been awarded the patent for Page Up and Page Down, I imagine all those mainframe programmers years before Microsoft existed just imagined using PF7 and PF8 to go up and down pages in their editors.

I hope to have the action of smacking myself on the head everytime the patent office approve something crazy patent application approved shortly.

Gravatar Image1 - If you actually read the patent, it seems that what they are actually patenting is a particular way of responding to Page Up and Page Down keys. Instead of going to the next screen full, or going to the top of the next printable page, it goes to the same relative position on the next printable page as you were positioned to on the current page.

Gravatar Image2 - It still smacks of trying to patent the rising of the sun or the tidal effect of the moon on the oceans.

Years ago I discovered at one time that at one time NCR had a patent on gravity. When will the Patent Office (particularly the US Petent Office) learn that some ideas should not be granted patents.

Gravatar Image3 - Maybe this all has its roots in the Goon Show, a BBC radio comedy from the 1950s. See Series 8, Episode 4 (broadcast 21 Oct 1957) where Neddie Seagoon tries to patent the word "Help"... { Link }
Lest we forget Mr gates did not invent the DOS operating system He obtained it from a lady who didnt know any better and sold it for a pittance .
Mr gates then sold the idea to IBM whos engineers were working on the same thing mainly to allow themselve to play computer games needing more memory on mini computers in their lunch break.
Oh yes we had fun with computer in the 1970 but we didnt know how to capitilise with them and Mr gates did hence Microsoft
