Should Domino support the SharePoint Protocol.

Category

One of the most common reasons I hear Domino customers considering SharePoint is because of the tight integration between SharePoint and Microsoft Offce.  Thanks to the European antitrust ruling against Microsoft, Microsoft had to publish the SharePoint Protocols.  Which allowed one company, Alfresco to build what they call a SharePoint clone.

Reading this artcile by Larry Cannell of the Burton Group.  I have to think, would't it be a smart move by IBM to support the SharePoint Protocol in Domino?  I think however if we were to see this from IBM it would more likely be on something like Connections or another Websphere offering.  Would integration like this help stem the flow of SharePoint within your company?

So far, I haven't seen anything that Sharepoint does that a well written notes client application would not be able to do - except save to a notes DB without going the "File Attachment" route. Most of the Sharepoint systems I've seen are file server replacements because they make searching for files easy and don't have the overhead of an external document/archive system.
I'm sure some enterprising development partner will build an add-in for Domino to support the Sharepoint APIs'. IBM can direct their resources at fixing stuff in the current versions of Notes.

Gravatar Image3 - Sounds like an IdeaJam-y kind of post.

Once I get fully ASW-enabled, perhaps I'd run out and post it.

But you really should do the honours...

Gravatar Image4 - Hmm, I posted and IdeaJam idea about having the Sharepoint/Webdav thing working for Quickr.

I didn't know about the "sharepoint protocol" documentation but this seems to open up the way.

Last week I've been experimenting with Alfresco's JLAN to provide CIFS/NFS/FTP access to documents stored in domino DBs. It can work very well the job Alfresco has done is very good.

I don't know what the sharepoint protocol offers to beat CIFS. Any pointer about this ?

For sure an "access gateway" to domino could be killer app. Using the Quickr connector is easy but not yet natural.

I'm looking forward to see more happening.
