Watch out. Facebook virus being sent around...

Category

I just got an email from a trusted friend on Facebook. It said:

Neil sent you a message.

Subject: Hey yo.

"You've been catched on hidden cam, yo:

It then includes the URL to the video and also the regular reply to this message link etc. the message also appears in my Facebook inbox.   The links are all correct facebook links, except the video link takes you to a virus.  So somehow my poor friend has had his Facebook account kidnapped, or Facebook has been hacked.
Found some info on Kaspersky http://cyberinsecure.com/myspace-and-facebook-users-targeted-by-new-worms/

Gravatar Image1 - Got this one too -- somehow since it came from Neil, I clicked far enough to see that it wanted me to download a "new version of flash" from some site in .cz. Doh!

Gravatar Image2 - My anti virus caught it before I got to select whether to launch it or not. So basically, make sure your virus software is up to date.

Gravatar Image3 - Funny thing is I sent him an email earlier today so was especially primed to click, which I did. I saw the .cz loading in the browser and closed the window before it finished. Anti-virus is up-to-date anyway...I hope.

Gravatar Image4 - Got the same one. It pretended to want a new version of Flash which is somewhat suspicious -- but a nice job of social engineering. I'll bet a few people fall for it and fail to notice that what it really wants to download is a codec, which is a major red flag. Anyhow, it simultaneously popped up a virus warning for W32.Koobface.B.

Gravatar Image5 - This is VERY frustrating to me as well. Sorry for any inconvenience and to be honest as it's not a system I have any control over (it's not like I can install an anti-virus program or something like that). I'm not sure what I, or anyone else can learn from this. I hope Facebook can come up with some way of stopping this in teh future. The really amazing thing is that it sent the email out to about 50 people and the subject line was different in each case - and then it stored them in my sent folder !!

From a social networking point of view however I have "spoken" to most of the people in my Facebook list today which if it hadn't been for this virus I probably would not have done.
