« A Notes 8 mail aggravation | Main| So what is my biggest aggravation with Sametime? »

Terminal Services and Remote Desktop are not a supported method of administering a Sametime server, and should be avoided at all times.

In the past I have always told Sametime Administrators, if they want to use Remote Desktop they MUST use the /CONSOLE (-ADMIN) switch.  Now I need to tell them not to administer Sametime with Remote Desktop.

It looks like IBM now has a different policy on supporting Sametime Administration through Remote Desktop, which is, it's NOT supported.  As stated in technote 1106554
Terminal Services and Remote Desktop are not a supported method of administering a Sametime server, and should be avoided at all times.

It does make you wonder what exactly Sametime is doing to make it struggle so under Remote Desktop, how come pretty much every other application out there from vendors can run happily and be administered throught Remote Desktop ?

IBM suggest using other products like VNC, PCAnwyere or IBM Desktop on Call.  My personal choice is none of these but the free version of LogMeIn.com, this is a great application to use if you are responsible for managing remote family members machines or servers.  Install this on their machine before you give it to them or the next time you visit, and you can remotely connect whenever they need help.

Gravatar Image1 - Carl,

PC Anywhere works great and controls the OS as if you were at the console rather than a session.

Works great for ST admin

Gravatar Image2 - I have run into this since V 6.5.1 ... In many environments thy don't allow anything but MS terminal services and what I usually do is just reboot the sucker, that takes care of it. In V8.x I have not actually run into the issue where the server does not have a clean start but my rule of thumb is always reboot if it happens .... after all, it is Winblows we are talking about

Gravatar Image3 - WTF, this is ridiculous. If an app is going to run on Windows Servers then it needs to support terminal services.
