ESPN Euro 2008 troubles and what we discovered

Category

Yesterday, pretty much the entire second half of the Turkey Germany game was missing from ESPN due to technical difficulties.  So we were constantly taken back to discussion in studio or shown shots of people in the fanzone.  So what did we discover, well we discovered that none of the ESPN commentary staff are actually in Europe, they are sitting in a room in the US doing the commentary, how do we know this? Well as soon as the pictures went they could no longer tell us what was going on.  Useless commentators became even more useless.  It also means that the commentators are never going to be able to tell us of some other event taking place on the field, as they see exactly the same as we do at home, so really what's the point of them?  How did we know that the final whistle had been blown and that Germany had won?  By the reaction of the fans in the fanzone when the whistle was blown.

Gravatar Image1 - I'm from Belgium and I was watching both a channel from Belgium and Holland. We were experiencing difficulties too. Sometimes no view other times no sound. From time to time somebody in the studio took over. Only when all goes well and we have sound and vision the commentary was live from the stadium.
We had somebody over there but still this is no good if the sound drops...
btw, I had no idea you guys in the US follow these European semi-finals too!

I fully agree with you that was really a bit disappointing, it seems ESPN still does not want to spend real money on European style football. I am from Switzerland but on a trip in San Diego right now. I am still quite amazed how many Americans (and no its not only the Latinos) are actually interested in seeing the games. Hope I will be standing in a public viewing zone in Zurich next Sunday for the final

Gravatar Image3 - It was an electrical power failure in Vienna (due to a thunderstorm) that caused the problems. It affected transmission Worldwide. Fortunately when the BBC lost the TV transmission it was able to switch to its Radio 5 Live commentary of the match. Worked out pretty well for Beeb. The final Spain v germany turned out to be a great match and thankfully the Spaniards did football a great favour by winning and playing with style.Emoticon
