Collaborative Music

Category

I was impressed recently by the effort to construct a novel by the Lotus community.  With different people taking on different chapters and ending up with Web of Deception.

Now my writing skills as anyone that reads this blog will attest are eh how can I put this, terrible, so there was no way I would try and take part in a book writing effort.  So it got me thinking what else could the community try doing that is a little different and a welcome break from our day to day computer stuff, that I might be able to take part in. One thing I know a great deal of us have in common is a music background, be that high school, college or self trained.  So I was thinking how about we try and write a piece of music.  A book is a little easier as the chapter flows from one to the next with no direct overlap, where as music is more like layers.

So before we start trying to get this going and figure out the logistics, is anyone interested in taking part?

Also thinking about this, has anyone ever tried jamming with someone else using products like Skype? Is the delay too much?

Gravatar Image2 - what's up with those links ?!

Gravatar Image3 - I'm not so sure about Skype, but I haven't really tried it.

There's a guitar website that I'm on that has a section in the forum that they're using for music collaboration.

They just do it all async and post the results in the forum. Someone decides on theme (ACDC-style, 12-bra blues etc), key, timing and keeps track of the participants and keep schedule.

Someone will build a backing track for drums and bass parts and post the MP3's. The participants will start using that backing track to start recording rhythm ideas and start soloing over different pieces. They play with different ways to put together the pieces and and discuss other ideas in the forums.

For as "web 0.5" as it is technology-wise, it works pretty well and the results are pretty incredible considering that there's almost no real-time interaction between the participants.
