No these snippets are not from some radical Muslim giving reasons to attack America or Europe, these snippets are from Mitt Romney's stepping down speech that he just gave.

The attack on faith and religion is no less relentless. And tolerance for pornography – even celebration of it – and sexual promiscuity, combined with the twisted incentives of government welfare programs have led to today's grim realities: 68% of African American children are born out-of-wedlock, 45% of Hispanic children, and 25% of White children. How much harder it is for these children to succeed in school and in life.

Europe is facing a demographic disaster. That is the inevitable product of weakened faith in the Creator, failed families, disrespect for the sanctity of human life and eroded morality. Some reason that culture is merely an accessory to America's vitality; we know that it is the source of our strength. And we are not dissuaded by the snickers and knowing glances when we stand up for family values, and morality, and culture. We will always be honored to stand on principle and to stand for principle.

I don't believe insulting Europeans is the best approach to get them to send more troops to Afghanistan, perhaps I'm wrong?

Oh and my prediction for the 2008 election?  If Hilary is selected, then McCain wins.  If Obama is selected then there is a slim chance Obama could still win, but most likely McCain will win.

Comments

Gravatar Image1 - I disagree .. if Hilary gets the nomination, Republicans will flock to vote against her. The Evangelicals will come out in droves. If Obama gets it, many Republicans will vote for him.

The Democratic process will decide the whole outcome. Worse, McCain is now going to focus on the Dems, while Hilary and Obama have to focus on each other. Whatever you want to say about what Romney said, he did the party a huge favor overall.

Gravatar Image2 - Stating facts about Europeans shouldn't be considered an insult. I have many relatives who live in the Netherlands, but I wouldn't want to raise my children there.

Gravatar Image3 - @2 Would you be insulted if Europeans said America was a war mongering, torture supporting nation?

Gravatar Image4 - I think you're wrong about the general election, though certainly lots can happen between now and November. Given the current mood of the country, the Democrats could run my daughter (she's cute and smart, but she's only 5) and yet they'd still most likely win.

On a serious note, John is right - the best chance the Republicans have is if Hillary is the Democratic nominee. People who would rather not vote for McCain and might either vote for Obama or (more likely) just stay home will make a point of voting against Hillary. McCain does not excite those folks, but Hillary most definitely does...

Gravatar Image5 - I'm watching Jon Stewart right now. His comment about the speech: "Is this out of some kind of conservative Mad Lib book?"

Gravatar Image6 - @2: I do raise my kids here, and I'm not too happy about the circumstances either. I think we do have problems, with regards to morality, respect for family values and stuff like that. I would have used different words than Mitt, though.

Wether our situation is that much different from the US of A I don't know.

Gravatar Image7 - As a Brit (and a Christian) I personally believe that what Mitt Romney said yesterday is true, and needs to be said. I hope it sparks a debate over here, as to how the loss of a Bible-believing framework to this society is causing issues with teenage pregnancies (especially in the UK), promiscuity, sexual diseases, marriage breakdown, etc. etc.

Far better that he stands up for his beliefs, states them clearly and honestly, and is consistent in terms of what he says.

Compare that with the bizarre statements than emanate from the Archbishop of Canterbury, including yesterdays masterpiece that "Shariah Law is unavoidable" { Link }

I hadn't heard much from Mr Romney until this point but having read yesterday's speech would have wanted to know more.

Personally I think that it is between McCain and Obama - if Hilary is nominated, then the undecided voters will flock to McCain, else Obama will win as the "change" ticket.

Gravatar Image8 - Pure bigotry on the part of Mr Romney.

I'm glad that I'm raising my kids in an environment where they are not taught that god created the earth 5000 years ago. In an environment where teenage girls are 4 times less likely to end up pregnant ({ Link } than in the US. In an environment with far less obese kids, and where we don't have 9 Million kids with no health insurance, not to mention the cost of higher education, School shootings, binge drinking,etc... . So bottom line we are raising our kids just fine in Europe. And our attitude toward Church and religion is just more mature and relaxed compared to most others regions.

Gravatar Image9 - Personally, as an atheist Brit living in a multicultural Islamic country, with a muslim wife (and children), I find Huckabee more scary (especially since Romney's dropped out), given his denial of evolution, repudiation of same sex partnerships, opposition to Roe vs Wade, opposition to gun control, and to universal health care..... Me, I'd vote Hillary (if able) but I'm quite happy with Barack; I just don't think he has enough experience yet.

Stuart, as for your comments regarding Rowan Williams, I think you're mistaken, and falling into exactly the trap he warned against when he made them. But I'd rather take that offline - I'm sure you can guess my mail address from my website details. As for your first point, remember that Romney is a Mormon, which has little to do with Christianity as I understand it.
