Car to Car communication via the built-in hands free bluetooth?

Category
Today sitting in the car I started to wonder how long it will be until we see a company advertising that they have enabled car to car communication through the car's built-in bluetooth handsfree. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible for a peer to peer connection, using bluetooth and not requiring a phone service etc. I do wonder what benefits it would have though, the key one would be able to give the person that cut you up some real verbal abuse versus them just seeing you in their rear view mirror (assumming they looked) moving your mouth but not saying anything.

Could be a great opportunity to speak with that cute girl/guy in the lane next to you. The car's license plate could be the unique ID for the device, so you could just say it and the machine would connect you. Could be handy when you have a group of people following each other allowing them to keep in touch. If you're going on a long journey, it could let you listen to the MP3 player in the other car, this is actually possible today with the number of mini FM transmitters out there, has anyone else sat behind a big SUV watching the kids DVD with the audio coming though on their radio yet?

Do I think someone will attempt this? Probably. Do I think it will be a success in the market? Probably not.

Gravatar Image1 - You could extend the P2P idea to a mesh. If everyone had the kit you could relay the message down the length of the Motorway.

Then, whenever you pass another vehicle, if the tags match, it announces a potential mate is in the vicinity and gives each of you the option to accept a connection. It could even be linked to eHarmony, Match.com, facebook, and Myspace !

They've been developing technology to extend the cellular network as a p2p network (car to car). The idea is that when you're driving in the middle of nowhere, your phone/wifi will still work via the car-to-car network.
