Sametime 7.5 Update

Category
I was visiting IBM last week to get an update on Sametime 7.5. Obviously I can't give too many specifics because of the NDA in place etc. but I can say this, the Sametime 7.5 client is looking pretty sweet.

The plugin architecture for Sametime 7.5 is really powerful, and I mean really powerful. The plugin architecture is really going to make the Sametime Client a powerful piece of technology to have running on a users desktop. Many of the things we have wanted to do with the Sametime Connect client will be totally possible in Sametime 7.5

About one and half years ago, I blogged a list about steps I thought IBM could take to help Sametime sales, some thought it was picking on IBM, others took is as it was meant, and honest assessment of how IBM could improve Sametime's chances in the market. So it's been a while so I thought it might be a good time to review...

1. Install and configure a Sametime SIP gateway at IBM, make it available to customers and partners
DONE and I use it everyday to chat securely with IBMers

2. Create a small team of engineers that goes around the existing Sametime customers in the fortune 500 and setup everyone of those customers with the Sametime SIP gateway connecting them to IBM, and providing them with a list of the other Fortune 500 companies that are available to connect to.
I think they would have liked to have done this, but there have been issues scaling the Sametime SIP Connector which has limited it's deployment

3. Advertise heavily that Sametime is secure encrypted chat, be sure to point out that yahoo, MSN, AOL etc are not secure, advertise the alternative, how Sametime can be made to speak to Sametime, use the reference story of hooking all these customers together via SIP to prove it
Nothing done - Haven't seen anything specific, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was noise around 7.5

4. Samples, Samples, Samples, the more samples of Sametime applications you can provide, the more likely partners are to build apps.
Not many changes here, but I do know they have some enablement folks working on stuff for Sametime 7.5

5. I would stop the the Sametime connect client release being tied to the Sametime Server releases.
This hasn't happened

6. I would either outsource the connect client to another company or dedicate new resources to revving the client internally, preferably people with an understanding of ho other IM clients have progressed in the last 5 years. I would have that group aim for a new realease of the Connect client at a minimum of every 6 months.
Sametime 7.5 has the potential to negate the reason for suggesting this. The plugin architecture for Sametime 7.5 and the customization capabilities it will provide are truly outstanding when compared to other IM clients out there today.

7. If you insist on The Java Connect client being the chosen client on a number of platforms, then open up the source so others can enhance it
Not done, not sure what the future is for the Java connect client i, with the eclipse based client and it's multi platform support it becomes questionable as to whether or not it is needed

8. Expose the connect client via COM, enabling all those VB and Office programmers to get easy access to it.
Not Done, but expect exciting possibilities with Sametime 7.5, there are various ways for COM etc. to communicate with eclipse apps, prepare to be excited!

9. Build a native Macintosh client, not a browser workaround
Not done yet, Sametime 7.5 will address this with a powerful eclipse powered client, should be sweet!

10. Take the existing Sametime meeting component and make it available as both an Active X client and Macromedia client. There by removing the concern of people running public meetings where for 80% of users it doesn't work
No changes here that I know of, although the Sametime test page did get much better in Sametime 7.0, people still tell me they prefer our free test page though, but they might just be being nice

11. Fix Broadcast meetings so that they perform better than paint drying
No changes yet, expect more in Sametime 7.5

12. Refresh the design of Sametime Meeting center, make it as easy to change the look and feel as a Lotus Quickplace with a stylesheet.
No changes yet, although the Sametime 7.5 Meeting Center has had a major face lift, I don't believe customizing the look for easy customization has been the focus

So the good news lots of progress has been made, and Sametime 7.5 is really going to help Sametime.

Comments

Gravatar Image1 - Wondering out loud.....plugins and samples....wonder if OpenNTF will embrace Sametime going forward?

Gravatar Image2 - In regards to #12, is it still possible to customize Sametime 7.5 in the same manner as the previous version like you have shown in your 4 Part series ???
Are there any differences we should be aware of??
