Make backups regularly and often...

Category
Yesterday the hard drive in my laptop failed, fortunately I had a day old backup (hallelujah) so was in good shape when it came to recovering the drive image. So remember, make those backups, frequently and often, oh and never forget to check the images you are saving every now and again to ensure they are good backups.

Gravatar Image1 - Besides moving more and more stuff into Notes databases (and replicate them onto at least 3 machines) I'm using SyncBack from 2BrightSparks (Basis Version is free) to keep "My Documents" in sync and to backup (Samba, FTP you name it) the data directories on schedule.
The ultimate tool for files however seems to be the IBM continous backup for Tivoli (not sure if it is the right name). It keeps previous versions of your documents and does an automatic backup whenever it has connectivity to the backend (preferably Tivoli storage manager). This way you don't need to remember the backups... it works behind the scenes.

Gravatar Image2 - Very good advice. So many systems, so little data saved. Last week at a new client site, I asked if they ever restored from their backups. "Why would we do that unless we need to?"
Once more, freeing slaves of ignorance. I feel so good. Ha!

Thanks for the reference on 2Brightsparks, I'll take a look at that.

Gravatar Image3 - Jesus and Satan have an argument as to who in the better programmer. This goes on for a few hours until they come to an agreement to hold a contest, with God as the judge.

They set themselves before their computers and began. They type furiously, lines of code streaming up the screen, for several hours straight. Seconds before the end of the competition, a bolt of lightening strikes, taking out the electricity.

Moments later, the power is restored, and God announces that the contest is over.

He asks Satan to show what he has come up with. Satan is visibly upset, and cries, "I have nothing. I lost it all when the power went out."

"Very well, then, " says God, "Let us see if Jesus fared any better."

Jesus enters a command, and the screen comes to life in vivid display, the voices of an angelic choir pour forth from the speakers.

Satan is astonished. He stutters, "B-b-but how?! I lost everything, yet Jesus' program is intact! How did he do it?"

God chuckles, "Everybody knows ... Jesus saves!"
