WebMessenger Mobile Platform Server

Category
As many of you know a few months back I got a new cell phone as my previous one died in an unfortunate boating accident. the new phone is a Treo 650, which so far has been pretty good. I get my email with SnapperMail using IMAP from the Domino server, and currently don't sync the calendar, ToDos or Journal (although I'd like to at some point).

WebMessenger are running a Promotion around Lotus Domino 7 where you can get a free 15-seat starter pack of WebMessenger Mobile IM for IBM Lotus Sametime. I decided to take them up on their offer as this gives me an opportunity to compare the solution against STEP and decide if it is worth recommending to customers, and also gives me the ability to access our Sametime Servers from my Palm.

After I downloaded all the required files, I installed the SUN JDK, and the WebMessenger Mobile Platform (WMP) Server in a VMWare session running Windows 2000 server. Installation took about 10 minutes and 3 reboots. After installing the server I configured a couple of users in the user management tool, and opened up port 9000 through the firewall to the VMWare box. Installed the Palm prc application, entered the server name, entered my password and voila, connected to the Sametime Server.

I have some issues with the way in which the client looks in the palm, which names being prefixed by Sametime/ unless you rename the contact etc. Saying that, it does what it is supposed to do and I can chat through Sametime. I haven't tried the Pocket PC client yet, but I would not be surprised if it was richer than the palm one. WebMessenger also allows access to other IM systems like AOL, Yahoo, MSN and ICQ. I haven't set these up on my phone as it's hard enough responding through my PC to all the AOL chats I get, so I don't mind not having those enable when I'm using the mobile.

There are a number of things I like about this product over STEP, one, I know this product isn't dead, is STEP dead? Does anyone know? The server installation is a breeze and it can be installed on a clean machine without having to install Domino or websphere everyplace etc. The client is more functional than the STEP client, but UI wise there isn't much difference.

So if you want to see it in action, find me at Lotusphere and I'll be happy to talk to a few bots etc.
