RIM announces partnerships with IBM, Novell and Microsoft for IM integration.

Category
Novell? Who would have thought it. This is beeter news for Microsoft and Novell than IBM, as IBM already has an offering, so for IBM it actually creates a little confusion, is this STEP? updated STEP? do I need STEP? Is STEP dead?. For Microsoft this is great news as it takes away the argument many make that it only runs on Windows devices.

Gravatar Image1 - When I was at Lotusphere they showed me how they were using Sametime as a client app on thier handhelds. It was going to be added when 4.1 is released. They were using MDS and the Sametime Java client I believe.

It would be helpful I would think. How many times I've been out of the office and trying to contact someone, and they wouldn't answer there phone, and weren't sitting in thier InBox.

Gravatar Image2 - In my view STEP has always been junk, particularly on the Blackberry device. I for one am glad that proper functionality may now be available for the BB and we can stop development work on our custom developed solution.

Gravatar Image3 - Well its a STEP in the right direction.

Gravatar Image4 - Groan...

Gravatar Image5 - The conector from RIM for Lotus IM (Sametime) will be available in Q4. There is already a product in the market (from WebMessenger) that works very well to provide Lotus IM on the Blackberry. This product is being adopted by IBM internally. I've used it now for a couple of months and highly recommend it.

Gravatar Image6 - Boy, IBMers are typically using ICT, Notesbuddy, Trillian or GAIM to access sametime from the PC, instead of native Sametime Connect. Nnow they use WebMessenger instead of the STEP client. Does anyone at IBM use any of the IBM sametime clients, or is just the customers that suffer with that

David do you know if this will just need a BES server and the RIM client?

Also for anyone wondering about Palm clients, there is Mantragroups causerie client.

Gravatar Image7 - The WebMessenger approach requires their server; the RIM approach will run directly on the BES. Both require a client install (over the air or connected) on the BB.
