Do I hate MS Word...

Category

So I very very rarely use MS Word, maybe once or twice a year, well today was one of those days when I had to use it. So I spent most of the day in it, adding pictures, changing layouts, all very tedious and unintuitive, boy does Word need the infobox, anyway I save the file, shutdown and come back to the file to be presented with this dialog...
A picture named M2

Fortunately the Office Open And Repair option got most of it back. I guess for that to be a feature right in the open dialog it must be a common occurence?

The really Crazy thing is, I was able to get the whole file back with Word Pro.

Gravatar Image1 - You might want to install <a href="http://www.openoffice.org/">Open Office.org</a> instead.

Gravatar Image2 - Yeah, I love the InfoBox. I'm surprised Microsoft never did that.

We write all of our product documentation in AuthorIT. It's a "single source" and "object oriented" writing tool. So for example, you'd add a graphic once (single source), and then use that same graphic on many documents. If you change the graphic, it's changed everywhere. This works with Text also. Single words, or entire paragraphs.

Content is separate from presentation. You can see this when publishing your documents. HTML documents can have one look, while your A4 (paper) documents have another. Kewl stuff.

Now if only Domino would generate style tags, instead of FONT tags.

Gravatar Image3 - Word Pro can do that with the graphics. When you import a picture you can link it to the file versus storing it in the document. Not sure it's exactly the same as you do with Author IT, but it sounds close.

Gravatar Image4 - Check out the presentations of their web site. It's a good introduction to "content management", instead of just "web content management".
