Well that has to be the strangest reason to give someone a red card

Category
Well this has to be the first for me, an El Savadorian player was sent off because he was wearing a gold chain. It was the players second yellow card, which means an automatic red, at the time we had no idea why the player was being sent off, we even had a couple fans throwing their plastic water bottles onto the field (they were soon chased out of the stadium by security). After reading about it afterwards, here's what happened, The player got a yello card early on for a dangerous tackle, then later in the game the USA players pointed out to the referee that the player was wearing a gold chain. Rather than do something sensible like tell teh player to take it off, the referee being a complete moron then gave the player a yellow card which was his second, which led to a immediate red card and eviction from the game. Russia can play druggies against Wales but a guy wearing some bling bling gets sent off?

USA played much better than El Salvador, who played too far back and were always playing the US strikers onside. There was not much creativity from the US side considering they were up against only 10 men, but they won 2-0 which is more than can be said for England against the Austrians. England will need to do much better against Poland on Wednesday.

Gravatar Image1 - After just taking the referee examination and reading FIFA rules for what seems forever. It sounds more to me like he was equipment checked before the game as required and put it back on, that or they just didn't catch it. If it wasn't a religious necklace then he was stuck giving another yellow card

Gravatar Image2 - I refereed youth and adult games for 10 years. Yes, Law 4 stipulates no dangerous equipment - including jewelry. But sheesh, this is the top level! Yes, in amateur matches, one certainly does not allow jewelry. I've made players tape their wedding rings, for crying out loud. But this call was wrong, IMO. First off, common sense and the spirit of the law were violated. Many pro players play with necklaces, and I have NEVER heard of or seen anyone in any match injured from any of the necklaces. And then...complaining to the ref that someone was wearing a necklace? UGH!
