The weather was great this weekend

although I caught nothing when I went fishing for a couple of hours. I think the little buggers are onto me. I watched a couple of movies that I'd had sitting on the shelf from Netflix for a while, one was a documentary about Shane McGowen called "If I should fall from grace" and the other was "The Magdalene Sisters". Very different movies. When you see movies like the Magdalene sisters, you realise that we don't need to look in our too distant pass to see that we are all pretty hypocritical people. If you were to hear described a Magdalene asylum today you'd probably assume it was taking place in somewhere like Afghanistan, but in fact this was Ireland, a democratic, civilized country. The last asylum closed in 1996, that's only 8 years ago! It's amazing the things that get done with religion being used as the excuse.
If I should fall from grace is a pretty good advert for avoiding alcohol and drug abuse. Shane McGowen who has written some fantastic songs and could probably be considered a modern day poet has lived his life to the full, but he looks like an old man. He'd give Ozzy Osbourne a run for his money if there was a shaking hand competition. This film documents his life and stories about the Pogues. I'm sure my friend Lisa would like this documentary as there are few interviews with Nick Cave in it.
