Upgraded the TIVO to include Home Media Option (HMO) this weekend.

Category
HMO allows the TIVO to show pictures and play MP3s from a PC on the network, additionally it provides the capability to program the TIVO across the web and play programs that are stored on a different Tivo. The thing that is really interesting is something that Tivo doesn't talk about regarding HMO, and that's the ability to play music from the web, so I can now play internet radio stations on the Tivo. Basically to set this up you have to create a M3U file, which contains the details of the radio stations, like their name and IP address.

I am constantly amazed at how much code other people write for devices like this, after looking around a little bit, I found this site http://javahmo.sourceforge.net, which is basically a java version of the server software, but not written by Tivo and it has extra capabilities over the Tivo Windows and Macintosh version, like allowing you get weather and cinema listings through the Tivo.

Obviously you don't want to have too many capabilities added to the Tivo device, because what it does it does really well and the last thing we need is another complicated computer interface.

Definitely try out and use JavaHMO. It's much better in my opinion than the TiVo version. I use it at home and it's great. The only thing the TiVo version does better is that it can auto-rotate your pictures based on embedded EXIF information in the picture itself. JavaHMO has that as a current feature request.

Anyway, enjoy. HMO opens up a whole new world on the TiVo!
