Touching the Void

Category
Went to see "Touching the void" tonight at the movies, the movie is all based on a true story and is narrated by the three individuals involved, the scenery at the beginning of the movie of the Peruvian Andes is amazing in itself, but the movie then very quickly becomes a fascinating story of human spirit and what it can achieve. I'd give the movie 4 stars out of 5.

For me the movie brought back some memories of when I went ice hiking with the scouts when I was either 14 or 15 in North Wales. On that trip we witnessed first hand the sight of a climber falling down the mountain side bouncing of rocks and frozen waterfalls. It was an interesting site, and at first we all just believed it was a rucksack, until we realised there were arms and legs attached. We were the first people to get to the climber, and I'm relieved to say he lived, but had broken his arm and his leg. A few of us stayed with the climber to apply first aid while some others in our group proceeded down the mountain to get help. An hour or so later, an RAF sea king arrived, hovered and hoisted the climber out on a stretcher. All in all it took about 3 hours from the initial fall to getting the guy out there. We all got out pictures in the paper when we got back, but having seen all this first hand, it put the events that surround the story behind "Touching the void" even more impressive.

One of the fascinating things about the movie, is that even though you know the people narrating the film are the people this actually happened to, and still alive, you still can't believe one of them survived the ordeal, it really is a great demonstration of how human character.
