Installer expert

Category
Not quite, but it's beginning to feel that way, today I was in the depths of install land, building installers for a couple of updated apps we've got coming out shortly. This is one of those things that has to be done, but is oh so tedious, figuring out the registry settings you need, where to put the files, configuring the un-installer, checking that the machine meets minimum requirements.

One of the new apps we have makes use of Microsoft .Net, finding the registry key to check if .Net Framework is installed took some searching on google, and then coming up with a mechanism to find the .Net InstallUtil file was a real pain, I'm surprised there isn't a registry entry for that (if there is please let me know!).

I went and measured the windows in the new place today on the way back from work, turns out they are all exactly the same size which made life a little easier, but I still had to check them all, as it can be hard to spot an inch difference in height. The couple below me there have some a couple of cool mutts, so I'm looking forward to kidnapping them to take on my walks.

In a lot of ways .Net is somewhat similar to Java, if you don't have the .Net framework installed, then the .Net apps wont run, and if you don't have the JVM installed Java apps wont run, although you don't have the nightmare of managing classpaths quite the same way in .Net as you do in Java. I much preferred it when installers just had to check the OS and that was it, so much for progress...
