It's amazing how airlines work...

QuickImage Category
My first job after school was working for the International Airline Support Centre in Brentford for IBM, it was an interesting job as you got to find out about how all this reservation software worked and how much flights were overbooked etc. So airlines have always had interesting reservation schemes progammed into their computers and today I saw a really interesting price for flights to the UK, here is a classic, how do these prices make logical sense?

From To Price
Boston, MA London, UK $230
San Francisco, CA London, UK $206
San Francisco, CA Boston, MA $288

So lets work this out, Flying from San Francisco to London is cheaper than flying San Francisco to Boston which the London flight passes over on the way? Flying from Boston to London costs more yet is less distance? Are people in Boston fatter therefore needing more fuel, or is there a big conspiracy and England is actually an island in the middle of a great lake and the channel tunnel actually goes to Canada?

a colleague recently had to make a double connection to get from the US to Europe, when a non-stop flight between the same origin and destination was available. Why? Because they were on a "free" award ticket. So, the airline had to handle their baggage thrice, print three boarding passes, give up seats on three airplanes instead of one... I'm sure this all makes sense to someone.
