SPIM and SPAM

Category
I was thinking last night of some of the reaons why I like Instant Messaging as a communications platform and one of the things that sprung to mind is lack of SPAM, or in the case of Instant Messaging, SPIM. The great thing I know about messages coming in trhough Sametime is that they are always related to me, and not SPIM, I'm not getting junk IMs through Sametime. So with Sametime messages I know they need my attention.

The same sadly, cannot be said for AOL, Yahoo and MSN Messenger. MSN is much like Hotmail, and I get lots of SPIM in that client. I get less in AOL and Yahoo.

I raised this as an issue at the Instant Messaging Planet conference in one of the panel sessions for the folks from ActiveBuddy, they build IM personalities for companies to do marketing through, where people can double click on the keebler recipe personality for example and hava conversation with it. My question is what's to stop them selling the list of IM users names that chat with the thing. Their response was they would never do that, as it is irresponsible, but that doesn't mean others wont! So be warned if you start using your AIM client to chat with "personalities" as I can guarantee someone will start selling that list even if it isn't ActiveBuddy.

Do others get SPIM through the public IM systems?
