How times change...

Four years ago the USA won the Women's FIFA World Cup, this year I had trouble finding the semi-final game on TV, I ended up finding it on Univision (Spanish channel), this year Germany got to the final beating the USA 3-0. This year was a sad year really for Womens soccer in the USA, with the closing of the Womens professional league, WUSA (a big part of the story line in Bend it Like Beckham).

I actually did see one game with the Boston Breakers and it wasn't too bad, coming from England I still have trouble watching women play football, in England girls pretty much play hockey and netball, which is why you often see us in the finals for those sports and not Football. With the huge number of women and girls involved in football in the US I believe it will be a few more years until professional soccer can succeed anywhere, as if it failed here with winning in 1999 as such a great launch platform, the odds of succeeding anywhere else are slim. I think the best opportunity for professional womens soccer going forward is only if FIFA require professional mens teams to sponsor the womens teams, which with the way many professional teams are struggling is very unlikely.

Anyway congratulations to Germany, and commiserations to the USA.

Oh and to any Boston Red Sox fans out there, my prediction is that the Sox will choke against Oakland in the decider, they are after all a Boston team
