Microsoft and IBM will disrupt the VoIP industry.

This is something Peyton and I have believed for a while now, and it was re-emphasized when we met with Microsoft back in January. There is a article on the Forrester site that talks in some more detail about the emerging heavy weights.

I personally believe Microsoft are a little better positioned to take advantage of VoIP at this moment in time with the new Office Live server, as Sametime will need some reworking to accommodate this environment better. Some may argue (OK me) that IBM has been so focused on moving Sametime to J2EE on the back-end, that there has been little effort given to adding new features to the Sametime back-end, which has given Microsoft an opportunity to catch up. I don't buy the argument that IBM has been doing this for 5 years, and Microsoft hasn't; I'm sure Microsoft has gained a lot of experience trying to keep the consumer based MSN Messenger up all day.

Sure there are inhibitors to deploying Offlice Live such as the requirements for Active Directory and WIndows Server 2003, but no one can argue that it's not turning into a more and more interesting space...
