I would like to apologise to the 948 LotusphereLive readers

Category

I got into the Opening General Session today, and the laptop could not connect to the network.  The wireless network was struggling big time.  So unfortunately I did not get to live blog.  Fortunately Chris was part of the Lotusphere Blogger program so he did get a network connection and did get to live blog.

Excluding William Shatner the guest speaker, my personal rating on the General Session was a 3 out of 10.  I will write more after Lotusphere about why I only gave it 3 out of 10, but right now the people who were involved in it, are probably exhausted and don't need me raining on their parade.

LotusphereLive is live and ready for the 2010 Lotusphere Opening General Session

Category

Chris Miller and myself are doing LotusphereLive.com again this year, year number 4 I believe it is.

LotusphereLive is built 100% using Lotus Domino as the infrastructure and is viewable by the iphone at m.lotuspherelive.com.

You can see the archive from 2009 and 2008 at the site.

If you're wondering what Chris and I use/see for the Live Blogging here is a quick movie of the UI I built for doing the logging. I mention loud music in the video, which it turns out you don't hear on the video, so apologies for that, it was loud for me!

You've installed Sametime 8.5, it isn't working, what now?

Category
You were really excited, you downloaded Sametime 8.5, purchased additional hardware and installed it.  But there are problems, it doesn't seem to work, how do you get a clue as to what's going on?

Each of the Sametime 8.5 server components do create log files, sadly there isn't like a single location for them they are spread all over the place.  The Sametime 8.5 Infocenter will tell you the location of the log files, but erhm, that document is incorrect, if you were running Sametime 8.5 beta 3 it would be correct but for shipping sametime it's incorrect.

Here is close to where you can actually find them (~~~~~ is short server name for the machine they are installed on):

C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MediaDMProfile1\logs\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MediaDMProfile1\logs\dmgr\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MediaPNProfile1\logs\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MediaPNProfile1\logs\ffdc\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MediaPNProfile1\logs\nodeagent\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MediaPNProfile1\logs\STMediaServer\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MeetingDMProfile1\logs\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MeetingDMProfile1\logs\dmgr\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MeetingPNProfile1\logs\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MeetingPNProfile1\logs\STMeetingServer\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MeetingPNProfile1\logs\STMeetingHttpProxy\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~MeetingPNProfile1\logs\nodeagent\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~ProxyDMProfile1\logs\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~ProxyDMProfile1\logs\dmgr\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\~~~~~ProxyPNProfile1\logs\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\STSCAppProfile\logs\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\STSCAppProfile\logs\STConsoleServer\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\STSCAppProfile\logs\nodeagent\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\STSCAppProfile\logs\ffdc\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\STSCDMgrProfile\logs\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\STSCDMgrProfile\logs\ffdc\*.*
C:\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\STSCDMgrProfile\logs\dmgr\*.*

Now in each of these locations, you aren't going to find a single log file, you will find lots of them, typically the ones to look in are the SystemOut.Log and SystemErr.Log, rad through the log files for the component you are having issues with to try and find the cause.

New Poll - Running Sametime Advanced?

Category
Finished the other poll, should Lotus Notes Workplace be killed.  Yes - 26.26% No - 73.74%

So it means time for a new one.  I don't come across many companies running Sametime Advanced, so I'm wondering how many people reading this blog are at a customer site using it in production.

There is a special answer for IBMers, as they can skew the results, please be honest with your responses.

What I want to see at Lotusphere

Category
IBM is obviously going to make some noise about Sametime 8.5 at Lotusphere, and for good reason it's been in development for years.  So related to Sametime 8.5 here is what I most want to see at Lotusphere.

Lotus Sametime Install Voodoo dolls.

I have decided that black magic is pretty much the only way to install Sametime 8.5 reliably.  I am going to hold off from venting too much, but I am not the only one that has wasted way too much time on the "promised land".  Yes I understand it all works really well inside IBM, but IBM says that about everything, anyone try and use Symphony to create their Lotusphere slides?  If no Voodoo dolls, maybe some chickens we can sacrifice?

Anyway, if we can't see Voodoo dolls at Lotusphere, I would love to see some regular Domino IBMers (not websphere gurus) locked in a room until they go through the entire process of downloading Sametime 8.5, installing sametime 8.5 servers, having all the functionality work, add in a firewall, ensure functionality still works. So no cheating in other words, no use of pre-configured IBM scripts etc. just the same as what customers have to do.

I look forward to being wrong and seeing the blog posts from none IBMers who have managed to install Sametime 8.5 without issue.  This post does not come from just a few short hours of frustration it comes from weeks and weeks.  I am beginning to miss Workplace IM.  Breath Carl breath.
